Everyone is jumping to Multi~Frequency.
While Minelab has hung their hat on the Multi~Frequency technology, two U.S. manufactures were using it first, both Whites and Fisher.
 
       With Garrett stepping to the plate now with multi frequency they looked into ways to improve their product.

Different soils respond to different frequencies in surprising ways.
       Back in the early 80's I was deeply caught up with the first target ID detectors being produced by Teknetics out of Oregon.
What an amazing breakthrough! Imagine, target ID! I would sit up at a sport show with a Teknetics Mark I, with the search coil hanging out over my table, while passers by would wave a coin past the search coil and I would tell them what coin it was! That sold detectors!
        In the mean time, my detector distributor was going bonkers over a new Fisher model that really had him excited!
This new Fisher was called the 1260-X and like so many detectors before it, it was what I called, "Just a beeper."
Finally, I found a chance to use one . . . I was very impressed! I hunted all the places I had been before and Wow! I was finding stuff that I had missed because the items were too deep!  And, these items were Indian Head Cents and old silver!

        Suddenly detecting was fun again! I was finding great stuff, and, I didn't have enough sense to go home!
This detector had two special features the other V.L.F. motion discriminators didn't have, extremely low frequency, and a lightening fast phase recovery. The frequency was 4 kHz and the recovery speed was so fast it wanted to crackle some. But non-the-less good targets, even deep ones, would give a solid repeatable signal.

         I was excited about taking the detector up north, in Michigan's U.P. where my wife was raised in Iron County. In Allegan County, where I had been using it, the ground minerals are not harsh and that detector could see items deep. But when used in highly mineralized soil, the 4 kHz was like driving in a dense fog with my lights on high-beam. Instead of seeing into the soil, it was seeing the soil! I was over powering the soil. 
         I went on to discover detectors operating around 12 to 15 kHz worked best in that reflective mineral soil.
The conclusion was, I need different metal detectors for different locations!
         So, now most companies are offering multi~frequency so the different soils are not the challenge. However the different frequencies tend to see targets differently. While one frequency has trouble dealing with badly corroded iron, it may also see silver targets deeper. At the same time one frequency may not identify silver and copper as well, it loves gold!
        With the new Vortex models the new 3 tier target ID works to define buried targets. The VX9 displays all three levels but the definition is being used even on the VX7 and VX5.

"AT" Stands for All Terrain and it is! This detector will work on top of the Mountain, at the mother-lode, or under the surf finding treasure!
      As it comes, in its stock form, you can put the detector underwater, as long as the standard headphone's ear-cups are dry . . . chin deep!
 You can also upgrade to waterproof headphones; but most shallow water hunters prefer the comfort and available volume control of the stock phones. Remember, the vast amount of lost swimmer's treasure (gold & silver rings and coins) are where the most activity was located . . . in the shallow-water . . .  shoulder deep and less!

OK, here is my take on the AT~Gold;  Prospecting has always been a very important part of the treasure locating which was of great interest to Charles Garrett. For 50 years he has been publishing books about panning, sluicing, dry washing and nugget shooting with the proper equipment.
When Garrett introduced the amazing AT-Pro, something embarrassing happened! The AT-PRO to everyone's surprise was able to out perform  Garrett's own nugget hunter!
 Naturally the question comes up, "What to do?"

What a concept, a nugget hunter that is waterproof to 10 feet! At the time, no manufacture was doing that!
So, they made some changes to the AT-Pro, like including a threshold option, making the detector super user friendly, and making a nugget sensitive 5 X 8 inch coil standard.

The challenge to any gold detector is, ignoring the heavy iron mineral particles which are heavy enough to be trapped with most small gold (a.k.a. black-sand)

To better deal with this problem a detector can be built to operate at a much higher frequency,
  At the cost of losing some depth on bigger targets.

Or, as in the case of the AT -Gold, Garrett changed the phase window away from the conductive trace iron. OK, that is a great solution . . . but it does have its cost. This new internal modification makes the detector sensitive to conductive wet salts at the ocean beach.
